Healthcare workers in Finland are joining Amnesty activists in lighting candles to honor Palestinian healthcare professionals unjustly detained in Israeli prisons. Together, they call for the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all 105 Palestinian healthcare workers who remain unlawfully imprisoned under harsh and degrading conditions.
On 27 December 2024, Israeli forces stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital – the last functioning hospital in North Gaza at the time – and arrested the hospital’s director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya along with other medical staff and patients.
The arrest and arbitrary detention of health workers from Gaza is part of Israel’s systematic decimation of the healthcare system in Gaza. The intentional creation of conditions calculated to destroy Palestinians in Gaza constitutes an act of genocide.
We are gathering at Narinkkatori where we will light candles for detained doctors and nurses. We will provide candles, but you can bring your own if you wish.
We will also provide ready-made signs. Please do not bring flags. Racist, sexist, or discriminatory texts and symbols are not allowed.
Demonstration is organized by Amnesty Finnish Section, Sumud, Health for Palestine Finland and Suomen Palestiinalaisten Yhdistys ry.
